Serve up a boozy, festive, crowd-pleasing cocktail.

Mulled wine is an aromatic mixture of red wine, spices and fruit served hot, and will surely satisfy a holiday party. The drink is sold at European Christmas markets, with variations found in England, Scandinavia (known as glögg), Germany and Austria (Glühwein), France, Italy and many other countries.

The mulling spices typically include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, star anise, ginger and cardamom. Oranges, lemons, apples and cranberries add a sweetness and tartness to the cocktail. See the recipe below for details.

Notes

  • Examples of dry red wine: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah/Shiraz.
  • Include the peel of the clementines in the pot. They will add a lovely, fruity flavour to the mixture.
  • Mulled wine pairs well with mixed nuts, olives, pretzels, crackers, bread and fries.
